3.1.Importance of populations

A population may represent those of humans, which are increasingly found in cities, or of another animal. Studies of endangered species, are particularly important as without an unerstanding of the population dynamics it will be impossible to save them.

3.2 Basic population dynamics

The rate of increase in any population is = Birth rate - death rate.
However this model ignores migration.

A more complete equation would be change in population = birth rate-death rate + net immigration. Net migration includes immigration (when individuals move into a population from outside), and emigration (when invididuals move from a population to somewhere outside the population).
