A system may be defined as any part of the universe that can be isolated for the purpose of observation and study.
There are 3 main types of systems
1- OPEN SYSTEM
An open system exchanges matter and anergy with its surroundings. For example, an ecosystem.
2- CLOSED SYSTEM
A closed system exchanges energy but not matter, the " Biosphere II" experiment was an attempt to model this. Closed systems do not occur naturally on earth.
3-ISOLATED SYSTEM
An isolated system exchanges neither matter nor energy. No such systems exist ( with the possible exception of the entire cosmos.)
